Periungual Warts Treatments

Periungual Warts What You Need To Know

Periungual warts are a type of wart caused by the Human Papilloma Virus. Periungual warts appear under or near toenails and fingernails. They start out small, about the size of pinhead but can grow larger and affect nail growth.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Periungual Warts are easily identified because of their location near the fingernails and toenails. Periungual warts may look like rough bumps with uneven borders. Periungual warts may also take on a cauliflower-like appearance. If left untreated periungual warts can become irritated and or infected and can be particularly painful.

What are the causes?

What are the causes? Periungual warts are normally caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus enters the body through breaks in the skin such as cuts and abrasions. People who bite their nails or pick at their cuticles are at greater risk for developing periungual warts because these actions cause trauma to the skin around the nails.

Types Of Treatments

Laser Electrical Cauterization (Preferred) – Genital wart cauterization is the medical practice of burning the tissue with an electrical laser to get rid of the infection. This genital wart treatment is highly effective, healing and recovery is faster, immediate cure with less than 5% chance of re-occurrence.

Surgical Removal (not recommended) – Reserved for rare cases of cancerous appearing lesions. Tissue type diagnosis. Your doctor will need to examine and discuss treatment procedures upon booking an appointment fully. Chance of re-occurrence of 30-40%

Freezing (not recommended) – This genital wart treatment otherwise known as cryotherapy involves freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen is applied to and around the wart, freezing the wart. As the skin heals, the lesions slough off, allowing new skin to appear. Chance of re-occurrence of 50-60%

Creams (not recommended) – Prescription genital wart creams are to be applied directly to the wart; they work by boosting your immune system’s ability to fight genital warts. Chance of re-occurrence greater than 70%

Beatle Juice Injection / 5FU Treatment (not recommended) – applied by a healthcare provider, creates a blister, and the wart/molluscum peels off with the blister.
