Periungual Warts are easily identified because of their location near the fingernails and toenails. Periungual warts may look like rough bumps with uneven borders. Periungual warts may also take on a cauliflower-like appearance. If left untreated periungual warts can become irritated and or infected and can be particularly painful.

What are the causes? Periungual warts are normally caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus enters the body through breaks in the skin such as cuts and abrasions. People who bite their nails or pick at their cuticles are at greater risk for developing periungual warts because these actions cause trauma to the skin around the nails.
