Types of Warts
What are warts? Warts are small growths on the skin caused by one of the many types of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). They are typically painless and typically do not disappear on their own and can last for years and can recur. Warts can muliply, and can be transmitted even if you use a condom. The number one cause of cervical cancer in women is genital warts. It’s highly recommended to remove warts before they get bigger / multiply.
What causes warts? Warts are caused the certain strands of the Human Papilloma Virus. There are over 100 different types of human papilloma virus.
Types of Warts
Genital Warts – Genital warts is an infection of the skin of the genital and anal area including: the vulva, vagina, cervix, rectum, anus, penis, or scrotum. Genital Warts appear as small flesh colored bumps. These bumps can appear alone or in large clusters. Genital warts are caused by certain types of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and are spread by skin to skin contact during oral, genital or anal sex with a partner who is infected.
Common Warts – Common warts are flesh-colored, they may appear as small raised spots on the skin with a rough surface. The size of the wart varies and may appear anywhere on the body, especially the fingers, hands, palms, elbows, knees, legs and face. They may be called “seed” warts because blood vessels in the wart look like black dots or “seeds.”
Plantar Warts – Plantar warts develop exclusively on the sole of the foot. They can be painful and cause difficulty walking. They may occur in a pattern, grouped closely together.
Flat Warts – Flat warts are most common among teenagers and children. They are small often the size of a pinhead and as many as 100 flat warts can cluster up together. They usually appear on the face, but can also appear on arms, knees, or hands.
Periungual Warts – Periungual warts appear under or near toenails and fingernails. They start out small, about the size of pinhead but can grow larger and affect nail growth.
Filiform Warts – Filiform warts or facial warts are long, narrow flesh colored growths that can appear alone or in clusters.
